Learning through play

On behalf of our client 4ELT, we created an interactive English learning game for children. Hop4elt is an application for Microsoft Kinect v2 for Windows. The whole project was carried out by the JMR team. The scope of work included technical and creative development . In addition to designing and implementing the software, we developed a complete graphical visualization and also prepared the soundtrack. The game has four gameplay modes tailored to the level of English proficiency.

  • Microsoft Kinect v2
  • Unity
  • DirectX
  • C#

Catch me if you can!

Kinect recognizes individual players and presents them on the screen as colored hands. When you start playing, different objects begin to appear on the screen. You can catch them through a hand-clamping gesture. The instructions are given in English, suggesting the items that should be caught. Capturing the proper object is signaled by the appearance of stars in the color corresponding to the player. If the player makes a mistake, the object disappears by greying out.

At the end of the game, a result screen appears and the winning team is announced. You can play again or return to the main menu.

Watch out!

Player recognized by Kinect are presented on the screen as characters differing in color and some minor element.

Different objects are falling from the top of the screen. Spoken tips inform the players which objects should be avoided. To move their characters, players need to lean to the left or right. The points are earned per second (1 second = 1 point). If one of the players fails to avoid the object, a graphic is shown and a sound played to indicate that a point has been lost. At the end of the game, a result screen appears and the winning team is announced. You can play again or return to the main menu.

Simon says...

As in the other game modes, different objects start appearing on the screen. This time, whole English sentences are spoken, suggesting the gesture that should be made after seeing a particular object (eg. „If you can see a rabbit, stamp your feet”). The instructions are chosen randomly from the set of more than 10 instructions. To earn a point, an instruction must be carried out properly and on time. At the end of the game, a result screen appears and the winning team is announced. You can play again or return to the main menu.
